Lyrics for Song: Znam za rijeku
Lyrics for Album: Other Songs - Maja Milinkovic

Znam za rijeku, znam za rijeku
rijeku gdje su svijetla grada
jedine zvijezde
koje nad njom bdiju

Znam za rijeku, znam za rijeku
rijeku gdje i sopstvena laz
ima ukus istine
znam za rijeku

Ljubavi, daj mi svoje usne
daj mi usne sa te rijeke
sto se radja u mojoj zedji
ali san se nastavlja

I moje usne sve od casa
kad se rastanu od tvojih
neprestano podsjecaju

Znam za rijeku, znam za rijeku
znam za rijeku
do kada

Znam za rijeku

A river is both a place and a private system of belief here. Its lights become the only stars, and even a lie seems to acquire the taste of truth beside its waters. The lyric then turns from landscape to intimacy: the beloved’s lips are imagined as belonging to that river, and thirst becomes the force that keeps the dream moving. Repetition gives the song the feel of a remembered destination, one the speaker knows but cannot quite reach.

The central image is not merely scenic. A river offers continuity, but the speaker’s questions—especially the final uncertainty about how long this knowledge can last—make that continuity fragile. The song seems to understand longing as a geography: a place can be known through desire even when the person associated with it is absent. Milinković’s documented career has moved between Bosnian sevdah and Portuguese fado; in a 2024 Balkan Diskurs profile republished by Global Voices, she describes those traditions as kindred in their attention to love and longing. That is relevant context, not proof of a particular musical influence on this recording. Independent criticism of the song itself appears limited; the lyric’s strongest achievement is its compact transformation of desire into a landscape with its own rules.

The river also places the song in conversation with a much older regional habit of making landscape carry emotional memory. Sevdalinka, one of the traditions in Milinković’s documented musical orbit, often gives intimate longing a setting that feels socially and geographically specific; Portuguese fado, the other side of her Fadolinka project, is likewise associated with longing and saudade. This lyric does not need to be labelled a sevdalinka or a fado to benefit from that context. Its own refrain makes the water a recurring address, joining a private love story to a place the singer can name but cannot fully possess.
