Lyrics for Song: Evolution
Lyrics for Album: Evolution

We can travel to the planets,
drive a mile through solid granite,
thrive in all extremes of weather,
but we can not live together.
We have pondered our existence,
tracked the comets in the distance,
but we're overcome with blindess
by an act of human kindness.
We have ventured where
none have gone before us,
but in matters fundamental
we are patterned on an old design,
welcome back tyrannosaurus,
evolution is a state of mind.
We have filled the halls of science
with the bones of mighty giants.
They'd been there for generations,
buried under ou rfoundations.
It's a page right out of history,
everything is still a miystery,
all except for one ddistinction,
we can stop our won extinction.
We have set ourselves apart
from all that's gone before us,
but in matters fundamental
we are victims of an old design.
Here's your chance Tyrannosaurus
maybe we can get it right this time.
Grab a club and join the chorus
evolution is a state of mind.

Evolution

"Evolution" is the fourth album by American vocalist, pianist, and songwriter Oleta Adams, released on 26 July 1993. It is a jazz and soul album that runs 57:14, released on Fontana (PolyGram), and it was fully produced by Stewart Levine. It is the follow-up to Adams' worldwide hit album Circle of One.

The title track opens with a striking observation: "We can travel to the planets / drive a mile through solid granite / thrive in all extremes of weather / but we can not live together." It is a song about the failure of humanity, about the way we have evolved in every way except the one that matters.

The album was recorded at Andora Studios in North Hollywood, California. It is a record that asks a question that is still relevant today: why can we achieve incredible things but still cannot live in peace?

What stays with me is how the song turns a scientific observation into a moral one. It is a song about the gap between our achievements and our humanity, and it is delivered with a sincerity that is hard to ignore.
