Lyrics for Song: Somebody Told Me
Lyrics for Album: Somebody Told Me

Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks, and I've had it with this game
I'm breaking my back just to know your name
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes, but don't blink, you might miss
'Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said, oh, heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight (ooh, ooh, ooh)
Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight
Well, somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential
Ready, let's roll onto something new
Taking its toll then I'm leaving without you
'Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said, oh, heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight (ooh, ooh, ooh)
Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight
Well, somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential
A-rushing, a-rushing around
Pace yourself for me
I said maybe, baby, please
But I just don't know now (baby, baby)
When all I wanna do is try
Well, somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential
A-rushing, a-rushing around
Somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential
A-rushing, a-rushing around
Somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential
A-rushing, a-rushing around

Somebody Told Me

"Somebody Told Me" is a song that has lived many lives. Originally released by the Killers in 2004 as the second single from their debut album Hot Fuss, it was written by Brandon Flowers, Dave Keuning, Mark Stoermer, and Ronnie Vannucci Jr., and it became one of the defining rock songs of the 2000s. Flowers described it as "the story of trying to meet someone in a club."

Motionless in White's version takes that classic and drags it into the dark. The Pennsylvania metalcore band gives the song a heavier, more aggressive treatment, trading the original's new-wave shimmer for crushing guitars and industrial-tinged production. The lyrics remain the same ? "Breaking my back just to know your name" ? but the delivery is entirely different.

The original "Somebody Told Me" was a massive hit, helping to launch the Killers into the mainstream and cementing Hot Fuss as one of the great debut albums of the 2000s. Motionless in White don't just clear that bar; they smash it, turning the song into something that feels entirely their own.

What I find fascinating about this cover is how a song can change meaning depending on who's singing it. The Killers' version is a cool, detached observation of nightlife; Motionless in White's is a desperate, visceral confession. Both are valid, and both are worth hearing.

The song's themes of obsession and longing are right at home in the band's dark, romantic world. It is a reminder that a great song can be reinterpreted in a thousand ways, and that sometimes the best covers are the ones that take the original somewhere it never expected to go.

It is a cover that stands on its own, and it is a reminder that the best covers are the ones that make you hear a familiar song in a completely new way.
