Artist/Band: Bob Marley & The Wailers
Lyrics for Song: Jamming
Lyrics for Album: Exodus

Oh, yeah, well, alright
We're jammin'
I want to jam it with you
We're jammin', jammin'
And I hope you like jammin' too
Ain't no rules, ain't no vow
We can do it anyhow
I and I will see you through
Cause every day we pay the price
With a little sacrifice
Jammin' till the jam is through
We're jammin'
To think that jammin' was a thing of the past
We're jammin'
And I hope this jam is gonna last
No bullet can stop us now
We neither beg nor we won't bow
Neither can be bought nor sold
We all defend the right
Jah Jah children must unite
For life is worth much more than gold
We're jammin', jammin', jammin', jammin'
And we're jammin' in the name of the Lord
We're jammin', jammin', jammin', jammin'
We're jammin' right straight from yard
Singing Holy Mount Zion, Holy Mount Zion
Jah sitteth in Mount Zion and rules all creation
Yeah, we're jammin',
Bop- chu-wa- wa- wa
We're jammin'
I want to jam it with you
We're jammin', jammin', jammin', jammin'
And Jamdown hope you're jammin', too
Jah knows how much I 'ave tried
The truth cannot hide
To keep you satisfied
True love that now exists
Is the love I can't resist
So jam by my side
We're jammin', jammin', jammin', jammin'
I want to jam it with you
We're jammin', we're jammin',
We're jammin', we're jammin'
We're jammin', we're jammin',
We're jammin', we're jammin'
Hope you like jammin', too.
We're jammin', we're jammin',
We're jammin', we're jammin',
I want, I want, I want to jam with you now
We're jammin', we're jammin',
I hope you like jammin',
I hope you like jammin',
Cause I want to jam it with you
I like I hope, I hope you like jammin' too
I wanna jam it, wanna jam it

‘Jamming’ turns a word for music into a call for unity

In Bob Marley and the Wailers’ ‘Jamming’, the word at the centre of the chorus holds more than one meaning. It evokes playing music together, but the lyric also frames that gathering as spiritual and political communion: the singers insist on the right to stand firm, to unite and to keep the session going despite attempts to silence or control them. The track’s rolling rhythm helps that idea travel. It is buoyant and danceable, yet its repeated references to sacrifice, resistance and Jah keep it from being only a party song. The performance makes musical togetherness sound like a form of persistence.

‘Jamming’ is one of the defining tracks on *Exodus*, released on Island Records on 3 June 1977. Bob Marley’s official site recounts the album’s circumstances: after an assassination attempt in Kingston in December 1976, Marley left Jamaica for London, where the record was made. That biographical context gives the album’s recurring language of movement, freedom and endurance particular resonance, although the song should not be reduced to autobiography alone. ‘Jamming’ was later issued as a UK single with ‘Punky Reggae Party’ on the flip side.

The Official Charts Company records the paired single’s UK peak at No. 9, with its chart run beginning in December 1977 and extending into 1978. The album itself became a major international breakthrough and is often treated as a key entry in Marley’s catalog; the official discography notes that it supplied more songs to the later *Legend* compilation than any other Marley album. The chart outcome belongs to the original 1977 release, not to the catalog entry as a digital track. What lasts beyond the number is the song’s double force: a warm invitation to dance and a collective refusal to give up the right to gather, sing and move together.
