Sto godina prodje, evo
kako planu Sarajevo
iz Obljaja jedno dijete
ubi cara iz osvete

Ref.
Jos i danas kraj Miljacke seta
jedan junak od dvadeset ljeta
onaj sto je mome rodu
donio slobodu

Na Vidovdan to se zbilo
niko nije k'o Gavrilo
uspjede u onoj masi
sve od ropstva da nas spasi

Ref.

Grahovo ga rodno slavi
to je bio Srbin pravi
i danas ga nasa djeca
proslavljaju kao sveca

Gavrilo Princip

The song presents Gavrilo Princip as a national hero who brought freedom by assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914. Its refrain frames the act as liberation and celebrates Princip as a saintly figure, compressing a complex historical legacy into an uncomplicated patriotic story. That simplification is itself important to notice: the lyric is not neutral history but a clear act of commemorative interpretation.

Princip’s assassination helped trigger the July Crisis that led to the First World War. Historians and communities have long disagreed over how to understand him—as a nationalist revolutionary, a symbol of anti-imperial resistance, or a figure whose act unleashed catastrophic consequences. The song’s treatment foregrounds one national narrative and omits the wider human cost of the war and the contested politics surrounding the event.

As a regional folk song, it uses repetition and heroic language to keep a historical memory alive for a contemporary audience. But cultural remembrance is not the same as historical consensus. No independent review of the recording was located. A responsible reading can recognize the song’s role in expressing one community’s memory while resisting the urge to adopt its simplification as fact: Princip’s legacy remains disputed, and the scale of what followed cannot be contained in a single triumphant refrain.

The TV Duga Plus Melodija Records audio page dates its online publication to 12 March 2015 and had 61,218 views on 14 October 2026. The historical figure offers a concrete, if limited, measure of digital circulation for this narrative song. It is not a chart statistic, and I found no independent review establishing a critical consensus.
