Better Than You

Phoneboy · Better Than You

How did it ever make sense to
Lose all this sleep
And wake up in your bed?
Roll over, choking my shoulder
Why'd I say yes
When you asked to come over?
Brokeback, it's hard to agree
The more that you talk
The less that I see
I know I know what we need
It's me without you
And you without me
Say what you wanna say
Cause I don't even like you anyway
We both know the truth
That I'll get through this better than you
Take what you wanna take
Cause I don't even want it anyway
We both know the truth
That I'll get through this better, better than you
Ooh
Better than you
We both know the truth
That I'll get through this better
Better than you
Bags packed when we were 16
You never wrote back
You never called me
We skipped every class
To drive to Manhattan
Stayed up all night
Slept in the backseat
We danced in the kitchen
No one's permission
Make split decisions
Now you're acting
Like everything's fine
You showed up to mine
So make up your mind
Too late there's no time so
Say what you wanna say
Cause I don't even like you anyway
We both know the truth
That I'll get through this better than you
Take what you wanna take
Cause I don't even want it anyway
We both know the truth
That I'll get through this better, better than you
Ooh
Better than you
We both know the truth
That I'll get through this better
Better than you
Chicken wing chicken wing
Lemon pepper candy thing
Get around check around
Check it check it check me out
Chicken wing little thing
Little lemon pepper thing
Been about chicken wing
Check me out check me out
Stop
Get it
Watch it as I shred it
And you
Stop
Get it
Watch it as I shred it
With the stop
Get it
Ricky in the stop
And the Ricky in the stop
And I think that stop go
Stop
Get it
Watch it as I shred it
And you
Stop
Get it
Watch it as I shred it
With the
Stop
Get it
Ricky and the stop
And the Ricky in the stop
And think that stopped yuh

Better Than You by Phoneboy

Phoneboy’s “Better Than You” begins in the morning-after wreckage of a relationship: a sleepless night, an ex in the bed and the realization that saying yes was a mistake. The chorus turns the breakup into a scoreboard. The narrator insists they will recover better, a boast that sounds less like indifference than something they need to keep telling themself.

The verses undermine that pose with snapshots of a shared adolescence: bags packed at sixteen, skipped classes, a drive to Manhattan, a night in the backseat. These memories give the breakup specificity and make the hook’s dismissal feel defensive. This is not a stranger being written off; it is someone trying to talk over a history that still has emotional force.

Then the song swerves into an extended “chicken wing” chant. The coda is comic, absurd and deliberately disruptive, refusing the polished catharsis of a final triumphant chorus. It could be a joke at the expense of breakup melodrama, or the mind changing the subject when the hurt has become too repetitive. Either way, the formal lurch is the song’s most revealing gesture: emotional closure does not arrive on cue.

Released in the run-up to Phoneboy’s Heartbreak Designer, the song’s title promises a neat study of romantic damage. The lyric is messier—in the best sense—moving between nostalgia, resentment and nonsense. The narrator claims to be doing better, but the structure suggests that getting there is still in progress.
