Vukovi

"Vukovi" is a song about running away and finding out, in the middle of the night, that you are not alone. Slovenian indie band Koala Voice released the track in February 2021 as the second single from their album "Plata," following the positively received autumn single "Vertigo." It is a deceptively simple song, built on a gentle but cleverly memorable guitar riff, and it manages to say a great deal with very few words.

The lyrics are sparse and repetitive, almost like a mantra. "Ja samo bje?im, jer nisam vi?e s njom" ? "I'm just running away because I'm not with her anymore." The speaker is fleeing a broken heart, and the song follows them into the dark. But then comes the turn: "Vukovi su mi prijatelji" ? "The wolves are my friends." They find the speaker on the other side, and together they run through the night. The wolves are not a threat; they are a pack, a community of the lost and the wounded, and the song becomes a quiet celebration of finding your people even when everything else has fallen apart.

Koala Voice have described the track as being about broken hearts and friendship. "Just as they found themselves," their official site reads, "Koala Voice remind us of the beauty of finding your own pack over time." The band's own name is part of the joke: wolves and koalas, it doesn't matter, as they put it. "What matters is that you know you're not alone." That sentiment is at the heart of the song, and it is delivered with a warmth that keeps the track from ever feeling heavy, even though its subject matter is grief and escape.

The accompanying video is an animated piece by Zagreb artist Marina Uzelac, who has worked with bands like Seine and Klinika Denisa Kataneca. The animation gives the song a playful, storybook quality that suits its gentle tone, and it reinforces the idea of the wolves as companions rather than predators. The visual and the music work together to create a world where running away can also mean running toward something, toward a pack that will accept you as you are.

As a reviewer, what I find most appealing about "Vukovi" is its refusal to overcomplicate things. The song does not try to explain the pain or resolve it; it simply acknowledges it and then offers a hand. The "pa pa pa" vocal hook in the chorus is the kind of thing that gets stuck in your head for days, but it never feels cheap because it is so clearly sincere. Koala Voice have made a career out of songs that feel both intimate and communal, and "Vukovi" is one of their best examples of that balance. It is a song for anyone who has ever felt lost, and a reminder that even the loneliest night can end with the sound of other voices howling alongside yours.
