Leave The Door Open

Bruno Mars · An Evening With Silk Sonic

Say baby, say baby, say baby
What you doin'? (What you doin'?)
Where you at? (Where you at?)
Oh, you got plans? (You got plans?)
Don't say that (Shut yo' trap)
l'm sippin' wine (Sip, sip)
In a robe (Drip, drip)
I look too good (Look too good)
To be alone (Woohoo)
My house clean, uh (House clean)
My pool warm (Pool warm)
Just shaved (Smooth like a new born)
We should be dancing, romancing, in the east wing
And the west wing of this mansion, what's happenin'?
I ain't playin' no games, every word that I say is coming straight from the heart, uh
So if you tryna lay in these arms
l'ma leave the door open
(I'ma leave the door open)
l'ma leave the door open, girl
(I'ma leave the door open, hopin')
That you feel the way I feel and you want me like I want you tonight, baby
Tell me that you're coming through
Ooh, you're so sweet (So sweet)
So tight (So tight)
I won't bite (Uh-huh)
Unless you like (Unless you like)
If you smoke (What you smoke?)
I got the haze (Purple haze)
And if you're hungry, girl I got filets (Wohoo)
Ooh baby, don't keep me (Waiting)
There's so much love we could be making (Shamon)
I'm talking kissing
Cuddling
Rose petals in the bathtub, girl lets jump in, Its bubblin'
I ain't playin no games, every word that I say is coming straight from the heart, uh
So (lf you tryna lay in these arms)
If ya'
Tryna
Lay in these arms
l'ma leave the door open
(l'ma leave the door open)
l'ma leave the door open, girl
(l'ma leave the door open, hopin')
Ooh-ooh
That you feel the way I feel and you want me like I want you tonight, baby
Tell me that you're coming through
(C'mon girl)
La, la, la, la-la-la-la
I need you baby
La, la, la, la-la-la-la
I got to see you baby
La, la, la, la-la-la-la
Girl, l'm tryna give you this
Ah
Hey, hey
I'ma leave my door open, baby
(I'ma leave the door open)
I'ma leave
I'ma leave my door open, girl
(l'ma leave the door open, hopin')
And l'm hopin'

(La, la, la, la-la-la-la)
La, la, la, la-la

Girl, l'm here just waiting for you (Ay)
Come on over, I'll adore you (Girl, gotta know)
(La, la, la, la-la-la-la)
I'm waiting, waiting, waiting for you
(Tell me that you're coming through)
Girl, l'm here just waiting for you
Come on over, l'll adore you

Silk Sonic make ‘Leave the Door Open’ an exercise in slow-burn courtship

“Leave the Door Open” is a carefully staged invitation. Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak sing as a suitor preparing a room, choosing a record and waiting to see whether the person he wants will come over. The lyric’s theatrical detail—silk sheets, rose petals, wine—makes the romance deliberately old-fashioned, while the smooth vocal exchanges keep the pitch playful rather than solemn. Instead of rushing toward a chorus payoff, the arrangement lets the invitation unfold at an unhurried pace, like a slow dance that has not yet started.

The song introduced Silk Sonic, the duo of Mars and .Paak, in March 2021 and led their album *An Evening With Silk Sonic*. Its plush, retro-soul sound draws on the orchestral R&B and quiet-storm traditions of the 1970s, with polished strings and a relaxed rhythm section framing both singers’ performances. The result is a modern recording that openly celebrates its influences without pretending to be a period artifact; its studio gloss and carefully controlled harmonies are part of the contemporary craftsmanship.

Commercially, the single reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. At the 2022 Grammys, it won all four categories in which it was nominated, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance. The Recording Academy called the night a “clean sweep” for the track. Those honors reflect both the composition and the recorded performance, a distinction especially apt for a song whose appeal depends on the interplay between arrangement, vocal character and production. The song’s theatrical courtship might sound like a throwback, but its chart and award success showed that listeners were ready for a meticulously made love song with no hurry to get to the point.
