Counting days until a sailor returns
“Arriva il marinero” casts the recurring departure of a sailor into a coastal love story. Jasna Zlokić’s narrator waits at the harbor with a ring on her hand, waving as another ship leaves and praying a lucky star will guide her beloved across distant seas. The Italian refrain—“the sailor is coming”—becomes a promise she repeats against the sadness of each farewell. The song appears on Zlokić’s 1990 album *Tiho sviraj pjesmu ljubavnu*, released by Jugoton. Đorđe Novković wrote the music and Željko Pavičić the lyrics. Its maritime setting and Mediterranean inflection complement the Croatian pop tradition Zlokić is associated with, while the waiting woman gives it a cinematic sense of longing. No dependable chart peak is documented in the sources consulted. The track is preserved in the album catalogue and later digital listings, where its Italian phrase remains its most immediate hook. Beneath the memorable refrain is a song about the emotional cost of a seafaring life: the person at shore must keep counting the days between arrivals. |
